Gemma regularly in all of Chambers’ key areas of work. Gemma regularly appears in the High Court and County Courts in a range of commercial disputes particularly in the fields of shipping, aviation, commodities energy and construction. She undertakes advisory and drafting work in all areas of her practice. Gemma also regularly lectures on topics related to her practice.

Practice areas

Aviation & Travel

Gemma has gained considerable General Aviation experience, acting frequently for the major airlines in carriage matters involving the full range issues under the Conventions and EC Regulation 261/2004. In addition Gemma has acted in a number of personal injury matters arising out of accidents both in aircraft and at airports, as well as several aircraft repair and leasing disputes.

Gemma also acts for a number of holiday companies, advising in relation to disputes arising out of the Package Tours Regulations as well as personal injury claims.

Banking & Finance

Gemma appears regularly in both the High Court and County Courts on a range of banking matters for the major banks. She has considerable experience of interlocutory applications and trials arising out of all aspects of banking work, ranging from mortgage and credit finance to professional negligence disputes.

Dry Shipping, Commodities & Transport

Gemma practices in the full range of dry shipping, transport and carriage of goods work.  She regularly advises and drafts pleadings in respect of numerous charterparty, demurrage and bill of lading issues, both on behalf of owners and charterers and carriers and cargo interests respectively.

Gemma is regularly instructed in carriage of goods by road disputes, both international and domestic, and in particular cases concerned with the CMR.  Many of her cases also involve issues arising out of BIFA and RHA terms and issues of incorporation and construction of those terms.

Gemma has a particular interest in jurisdictional issues and is  regularly asked to advise and lecture in that area.

Energy, Shipbuilding & Construction

Gemma is currently developing her shipbuilding practice and is involved in a number of ongoing disputes, acting for both yards and buyers internationally. She has significant experience of drafting detailed pleadings in complex shipbuilding cases and advising in relation to a full spectrum of legal and practical issues arising out of shipbuilding contracts. Gemma also has experience of superyacht construction disputes.

Commercial Litigation

Gemma is frequently instructed in her own right and as junior in general commercial disputes, in particular those with significant contractual or jurisdictional issues. Gemma is currently acting as junior in high-profile commercial litigation raising issues of breach of fiduciary duty and dishonesty arising out of ship-broking practices.

Insurance & Reinsurance

Gemma is regularly instructed in both marine and non-marine insurance matters. She has experience of both advising and drafting pleadings in a full range of policy issues, including misrepresentation, non-disclosure and fraud.

Salvage, Collision & Admiralty

Gemma is gaining significant wet shipping experience, acting in collision, salvage and general average matters.  She is also instructed in a number of disputes concerning ports, harbours and pollution issues.  

Gemma recently appeared as junior to Jeremy Russell QC in a collision action arising out of a collision with the seismic streamer vessel “WESTERN NEPTUNE”; before Steel J.   She also recently acted for shipowners in a large salvage arbitration as junior to Lionel Persey QC.
