Shipping & Maritime

Quadrant is recognised as the leading shipping set. We are consistently involved in the key cases in the sector, and often represent both (or all) parties in disputes. We are uniquely positioned to provide world-class shipping expertise at all levels as we have skills and experience in every possible type of shipping dispute, from the full spectrum of all dry and wet shipping matters and marine insurance to fraud, insolvency, finance and other commercial disputes. Our expertise is repeatedly called upon to run cases at the highest level, demonstrated by our numerous Supreme Court cases as well as an extensive amount of arbitration hearings, often lengthy and complex.

Dry Shipping

Quadrant Chambers enjoys a pre-eminent reputation for its leadership and excellence in the dry shipping sector. Our barristers’ expert services as litigators, advocates and arbitrators are sought by clients around the world.

We advise and represent parties in a wide variety of cases relating to shipping and offshore activities in courts, arbitrations, inquiries and other tribunals in the UK, as well as in international arbitrations and foreign proceedings.

We offer an extensive breadth of expertise, know-how and experience across the full-range of dry shipping work, including:

  • Bills of lading
  • Charterparties (time, voyage and bareboat)
  • Contracts of affreightment
  • Shipbuilding
  • Ship sale and purchase contracts

Our skills are increasingly being applied to the off-shore and energy sectors. We are also able to provide expert assistance in complementary fields such as insolvency, banking and finance.

Wet Shipping

Quadrant Chambers is the go-to set in the wet-shipping field.

“Wet Shipping” covers a broad range of casualty generated cases which call for specialist maritime barristers. Some of these claims may arise under a charterparty or bill of lading, but the principal litigation issues are nevertheless “wet shipping”, involving the handling of ships or their technical operational management.

Quadrant’s wet shipping team has unrivalled experience and expertise. The last three admiralty judges were all former heads of chambers and three of the current panel of Lloyds Open Form salvage arbitrators are members of chambers.

Our barristers are the authors or editors of leading textbooks such as Kennedy on Salvage, Marsden on Collisions, Rainey on The Law of Tug and Tow and Offshore Contracts, Derrington/Turner on the Law and Practice of Admiralty Matters and Meeson/Kimbell on Admiralty Jurisdiction and Practice
