Celebrating 75 Years of Women Silks

Celebrating 75 Years of Women Silks

OVERVIEW

Earlier this month, Poonam Melwani KC, Nichola Warrender KC, and Belinda Bucknall KC joined over 350 women KCs and judges at the Royal Courts of Justice to mark 75 years since women first ‘took silk’ and became King’s Counsel – an award for excellence in advocacy in the higher courts.

Since 1949, the number of women silks has been steadily increasing, with over 545 being appointed in the last 25 years, compared to just 96 up until 1998, and we’re proud that Quadrant is represented in those figures.

Women play prominent and leading roles in the business of Chambers - Poonam Melwani KC is our Head of Chambers, Ruth Hosking is Deputy Head, and Sarah Longden was appointed Chief Operating Officer in May 2024.

We are very keen to support and encourage women in our profession and are hosting our annual “Women at the Commercial Bar” event on 9 December. All are welcome to attend, and further details will be available in the coming weeks. For more information, please email us at women@quadrantchambers.com.
