Asif H Qureshi is Professor of Law at the School of Transnational Law, Peking University in China since 2021. Prior to that he was Professor of International Economic Law, at the School of Law, Korea University, Seoul, Korea, since 2012. Between 1985 to 2012 he was Professor of Law at the University of Manchester, UK. He was called to the Bar in 1978 and has been attached to Quadrant Chambers in London, UK since 1998. He is registered as a Public Access practitioner. His specialisms include Public International Law, International Economic Law in particular WTO law, Investment Law, Monetary Law and International Taxation. He also has experience in conducting discrimination cases in employment tribunals and judicial review proceedings in High Court in UK.
In 2002, he was appointed by the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to be a member of the Roster of WTO Non-Governmental Panellists eligible for Panel service. He is also on the following list of arbitrators: (1) Appointed as an arbitrator to the Panel of International Arbitrators by the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) (December 1, 2012, and continuing May 31,2024); (2) Appointed as an arbitrator Shenzhen Arbitration Commission (SCIA) (March 2222-25.); (3) Appointed as an Arbitrator to the Panel on South China International Arbitration Center (SCIAHK) (Hong Kong); (4) Appointed on Panel -- APCAM International Certified Mediator (AICM) 2021; (5) Appointed as an International Mediator on a panel at the Korea International Mediation Centre October 2020.
Professor Qureshi has acted as a consultant to and for various governments and international organizations on WTO law including Pakistan, Saudi-Arabia, Cambodia, Korea, the Commonwealth Secretariat; the European Commission; and the WTO. In this context he has given legal advice on WTO accession issues; drafting Trade Remedies legislation in conformity to WTO law and given advice on international trade disputes.
He was a long-standing member of the International Law Association Committee on International Trade. Asif Qureshi is the Editor-in-Chief of Manchester Journal of International Economic Law. In addition, he serves on the editorial boards of several international law journals. He has held various Visiting Professorships including at the University of California, Irvine; Osaka University, Japan; University of Malaya, Malaysia; Fudan Law School, Fudan University, Shanghai; and Tsinghua University Law School, Beijing, China; University of Lausanne in Switzerland; and the Université Paris1, Panthéon-Sorbonne, France. In 1992, he was a Visiting Scholar at Yale Law School, Yale University, USA; and in 2016 he was a Visiting Professor in the Legal Department of the IMF in Washington, USA
He has published over seventy articles/chapters in international Journals and fourteen books including Interpreting WTO Agreements (Cambridge University Press: 2006 and 2015); International Economic Law (Sweet and Maxwell: 1999, 2007, 2011,2019); and The Public International Law of Taxation, (Kluwer: 1994, 2019); The Americanisation of the World Trade Order (Routledge: 2022) His works are regularly cited and used globally.
